The battery ran out on the road — what happens next
For an electric car there is no "we will bring you some fuel". The car is transported to a charging point or to your home.
Symptoms
- The gauge shows 0% or "--"
- The car switched to reduced power mode
- Climate control and heating shut themselves off
- Speed drops and will not rise
Pull over while you can still move. When the percentage hits zero most electric cars keep a small reserve and continue for a few kilometres at reduced power. That distance is what you use to get off the carriageway — onto a lay-by, a car park or a wide verge, never a running lane.
Switch off everything that draws power: heating, air conditioning, seat heaters. Heating is the biggest consumer after driving itself, and in winter it can eat the reserve in minutes.
Charging on the spot is practically impossible. Mobile chargers are rare, deliver few kilowatts and need hours to produce useful range. The right answer is almost always transport to the nearest working charging point.
Do not leave the battery at zero for long. Deep discharge damages the cells, and a fully flat battery may not wake the car up even once it is plugged in.
