The engine is overheating — what to do immediately
The temperature gauge is in the red or steam is coming out. Driving on destroys the engine within minutes.
Symptoms
- Temperature gauge in the red zone
- Steam from under the bonnet
- Burnt or sweet smell
- Heater blows cold
Stop immediately and switch off the engine. Every minute with an overheating engine means a warped head or blown gasket — a repair worth thousands.
Do not open the radiator cap. The system is pressurised; boiling coolant shoots upwards and causes severe burns. Wait at least 30 minutes.
Common causes: low coolant, a broken water pump belt, a blocked radiator, a faulty thermostat or fan.
When you need a tow: if the coolant level drops again after cooling, if there is a puddle under the car, or the gauge climbs within the first minutes — the car must be transported, not driven. We come with a flatbed and take it to a garage.
