A flat tyre with no spare — what are the options
More and more new cars leave the factory without a spare — only a compressor and sealant.
Symptoms
- Sudden noise and the wheel pulling
- The car drags to one side
- The tyre has come off the rim
- A sidewall tear
Safety first. Pull over as far right as possible, hazard lights on, warning triangle 100 m back on a motorway. Everyone leaves the car and stands behind the barrier, not inside.
Tyre sealant only works for a small puncture in the tread. With a torn sidewall or a tyre off the rim it will not help — do not waste your time.
Do not drive on a flat. The rim is ruined within a few kilometres, and at speed the car becomes uncontrollable.
When you need a tow: no spare, a torn sidewall, or you are on a motorway. We take the car to the nearest tyre shop — so you pay for one tyre, not a tyre and a rim.
