A flat battery — why it happens and when a jump start will not help

Batteries usually die at the first cold snap — but the cause has been building for months.

Symptoms

  • Dim headlights
  • Slow cranking
  • Dashboard flickering when starting
  • The car only starts with help

A battery lasts on average 4–6 years. After that, every cold morning could be its last.

Common causes: short city trips where the battery never fully recharges; lights left on; a consumer left running; a faulty alternator; corroded terminals.

When a jump start will NOT help: if the battery has an internal short (it holds no charge at all), if the real fault is the alternator, or if a lithium battery is deeply discharged. In those cases the car dies again within minutes.

Quick check: start the engine and disconnect a terminal — if the engine stops, the alternator is not charging.

When you need a tow: when the car will not start after a jump, or dies again shortly after. We take it to a garage instead of you restarting it five times along the way.
