The car will not start in the cold — what changes in winter
Below zero a battery delivers up to 40% less current and the oil thickens. Together they stop an otherwise healthy car.
Symptoms
- The engine cranks very slowly
- Hard starting only in the morning
- Headlights dim when starting
- The heater blows cold for a long time
Cold does not ruin a battery — it reveals one that was already weak. A 4–5 year old battery survives summer, but the first morning below −5°C finishes it.
Do not crank for more than 10 seconds at a time. Pause for half a minute; otherwise you drain what is left and overheat the starter.
On a diesel: thickened fuel and a blocked filter give the same picture. If the car fires and dies within seconds, the problem is fuel, not electrics.
When you need a tow: if the car still will not start after a jump, if starting takes more than two attempts every morning, or if you are on the road and cannot wait. We take it to a garage — cheaper than a new starter.
