The brake pedal sinks — stop immediately
A soft or sinking pedal means air or a leak in the system. This is the one case where the car must not be driven even to the garage.
Symptoms
- The pedal goes to the floor
- Braking distance grows
- The car pulls to one side when braking
- A puddle by a wheel
Stop at the first safe place. Soft brakes do not "bed in" — the condition only worsens, and the difference between a long stopping distance and none can be a single bend.
If the pedal slowly sinks while held — a leak in the master cylinder. If it feels spongy — air in the system. Both need a garage, not a top-up.
The handbrake is not a spare brake at speed: it locks only the rear wheels and on wet tarmac causes a skid.
